Do you ever get jealous of architects from other countries? It’s something that happens to me all the time, actually. Whenever I see a beach house in a magazine, I just imagine how great it must be to live in a tropical climate, where inside and outside spaces are less defined.

As a Canadian architect, one of the biggest challenges I face is finding doors and windows that not only look good but are energy efficient and keep me connected to the outdoors when temperatures fluxuate from subzero to humid. That all changed when I came across Portella, an Austin, Texas-based company that manufactures high-performing steel doors and windows.

One of my favorite products is their pivot door which can be customized to any size or area. It really allows you to get that desired flow between inside and out with a super stylish design.

Just this month Portella announced a patent for a thermally-broken window profile with really narrow sightlines, more narrow than any other steel door or window system currently available on the market. What it means is that you can now get sleek European styling for your home without having to import products directly from Europe, saving you time and money.
