Located along the coast of the Gulf of Oman, Muttrah is a historically important sea port in the region and a vital hub for shipping and fishing in the country. Replacing an outdated 1960’s era building nearby, Scandinavian architecture firm Snøhetta was commissioned to design a new landmark fish market for the city, one that would engage new tourism while creating a more contemporary facility for its fishermen.

Described by the studio as “merging tradition with innovation, the market is designed to sympathetically unite the old and the new.” It’s most striking feature is undoubtably its metal-fin canopy that covers over 4,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor space. Inspired by arabic calligraphy, the fins radiate around the building’s curved walls giving it an almost skeletal effect (and perhaps a metaphor for the gutting and scaling that happens below it).

The fish market is located along the waterfront and within the harbour.
