The most visual architecture guide to Tokyo ever published – more than 60 stunning buildings, designed by some of the world’s greatest architects, presented on a beautifully illustrated map to accompany you on your next trip to “the City of 808 Villages.”

Tokyo architecture is a vibrant fusion of tradition and innovation. The city’s skyline is a testament to this dual identity and features historic temples and modern skyscrapers coexisting harmoniously. Our architecture guide celebrates this duality by highlighting traditional wooden structures like the Meiji Shrine and Senso-ji Temple, which stand as timeless symbols of Japan’s rich heritage, as well as futuristic designs from Kenzō Tange, like St. Mary’s Cathedral and the iconic Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

The city’s compact urban landscape also inspires creative solutions, with narrow, multi-story buildings maximizing limited space like Toyo Ito & Associate’s Tod’s Omotesando or Fumihiko Maki’s spiral building.

Its innovative sustainable practices and use of timber, however, is what sets Tokyo’s architecture apart from many, and our architecture guide covers it all with projects from leading architects like Kengo Kuma, whose Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center and SunnyHills building feature highly expressive wooden facades.

This thoroughly researched architecture guide is a must-have for architecture enthusiasts of all ages. It makes travel planning effortless and boasts an up-to-date curated list of buildings not found anywhere else; the perfect pocket-companion for your next trip abroad.

I have been to Tokyo a few times, and have seen some of these buildings but didn’t know the names or the name of the architecture firms that designed them so this guide has been great for educating me!
